Moving to Cyprus with a teenager is usually a schooling decision first and a property decision second. Secondary pathways in the Republic of Cyprus split between free public schools taught mainly in Greek and fee-paying private schools that may follow British, IB or other approved programmes. Get the pathway realistic before you shortlist a home.
This guide is for relocating families comparing options in the Republic of Cyprus only. It sits alongside our education briefing on schools and universities. Cyprus Gate advises on buyer-side property and relocation logistics. We do not place children in schools, rank institutions, or give SEND advice.
State Greek secondary versus English or British private
Public secondary schooling runs through gymnasium (lower secondary) and then lyceum or technical routes (upper secondary). Public places are free for pupils who live in Cyprus. Teaching is mainly in Greek. Non-Greek speakers can access Ministry-organised Greek language support and, where needed, transition reception classes.
Private secondary schools must be approved by the Ministry of Education under the Private Schools Law of 2019. The Ministry groups them as same type, similar type, or different type, depending on how closely they follow the public curriculum. English-medium instruction is concentrated in private schools of a different or similar type on the Ministry lists.
For a teenager mid-exam cycle, the practical question is continuity: can they finish the pathway they started, in a language they can work in, with subjects that still lead to the university destinations you have in mind? Apolytirion, IGCSE/A-Level and IB are different leaving routes. Match the leaving qualification to the destinations, then shortlist Ministry-approved schools that actually teach that route.
IGCSE, A-Level and IB continuity
Families arriving from the UK or other British-curriculum systems often look for IGCSE and A-Level continuity. Others need IB Diploma continuity. Some private schools in Cyprus teach these pathways; others follow a curriculum closer to the public system. Do not assume every English-medium school offers the same exam board or the same subject set in Forms 4 to Upper Sixth equivalent.
- Ask which curriculum type the Ministry listing records for the school, and which exam pathway your year group would join.
- Confirm subject availability for the remaining years, not only for Year 7 or Year 10 entry.
- Budget registration deposits, annual tuition, exam fees, transport and uniforms separately from headline fees.
- Treat published fee examples on our education briefing as single-school schedules only, never as market averages.
Start from the Ministry private secondary lists summarised in the education schools and universities briefing, then verify entry tests, waiting lists and document checklists with each school for the year you intend to enrol.
Social transition for teenagers
Academic fit is only half the move. Teenagers also weigh friendship groups, extracurricular life, commute length and how quickly they can function socially in Greek or English. A dense English-speaking peer group can ease the first term; a Greek-medium public place can accelerate language immersion if the family is committed to that path and support is in place.
Plan the school year calendar against your relocation timeline. January public-registration windows and private-school assessment dates rarely line up with a summer completion. Bring prior school reports, predicted grades and any exam board candidate numbers so admissions teams can place year group accurately.
District fit: Limassol and Nicosia denser English options
English-instruction private secondary examples on the Ministry list cluster most densely in Limassol and Nicosia. Paphos and Larnaca have fewer English-medium secondary options, so capacity and entry tests need earlier verification. Famagusta notes on our briefing cover government-controlled areas of the Republic of Cyprus only.
District guides help you weigh commute and lifestyle once a pathway is realistic: Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos and Larnaca. Proximity to a preferred school is a lifestyle filter when shortlisting homes, not a placement guarantee.
Light property note for families with teens
Once a schooling pathway is on the table, treat school commute time as a hard filter in your Needs and Status Analysis. A coastal lifestyle that looks perfect in August can mean a long daily drive in exam season. Cyprus Gate helps you align district and home choice with that plan. Admissions stay with the schools and the District Education Office.
Frequently asked questions
Should we choose a state Greek secondary school or an English-medium private school?
It depends on language continuity, university destinations and how quickly your teenager can adapt to Greek-medium teaching. Public gymnasium and lyceum are free and taught mainly in Greek. English-medium pathways sit mainly in Ministry-approved private schools. Cyprus Gate does not place children or rank schools; compare options on the Ministry lists, then confirm curriculum and entry rules with each school.
Can my teenager continue IGCSE, A-Level or IB in Cyprus?
British and IB pathways are available through some private schools of a different or similar type approved by the Ministry of Education. Continuity is strongest where the school already teaches the pathway you need for the remaining years. Verify year-group entry, subject availability and exam centres with the school, not from marketing pages alone.
Which districts have denser English secondary options?
Limassol and Nicosia currently have denser clusters of English-instruction private secondary schools on the Ministry list than Paphos or Larnaca. District fit still turns on commute, lifestyle and housing budget. Use the Cyprus Gate district guides as lifestyle filters, then confirm admissions directly with schools.
