Moving to Cyprus with Young Children

Moving to Cyprus with young children usually starts with early years and primary, not secondary exam boards. Families need a clear read on nursery and kindergarten options, when pre-primary becomes compulsory, and how public educational regions interact with where you live. Property shortlists work better once that pathway is realistic.

This guide covers the Republic of Cyprus only and pairs with our education briefing on schools and universities. Cyprus Gate advises on buyer-side property and relocation logistics. We do not place children in schools, rank nurseries, or give SEND advice.

Nursery, kindergarten and the early-years map

Early years cover nurseries and kindergartens before and during compulsory pre-primary. Public pre-primary places follow educational-region rules. Private kindergartens must be Ministry-approved; the Ministry currently counts 173 private kindergartens in the Republic. Confirm ages, hours, language of instruction and fees directly with each setting.

Private English early-years settings vary widely in hours and programme style. Some feed into private primary pathways; others are standalone. If you want English-medium continuity into primary, check whether the setting is linked to a Ministry-listed private primary school and what the later transition looks like.

Compulsory and pre-primary ages for 2026-27

For 2026-27, compulsory pre-primary applies if a child is 4 years and 4 months before 1 September. Primary starts from age 6 before 1 September. Lower secondary (gymnasium) is compulsory to age 15 or completion of that cycle. Public schooling remains free through upper secondary to 18.

Younger children may gain a public pre-primary place only if capacity remains after compulsory-age registrations, subject to published criteria. Prefer Ministry wording on ages and registration over secondary summaries where figures diverge. Detail and sources sit in the education briefing.

Primary transition and language

Public primary schools teach mainly in Greek. Children who live in Cyprus may enrol regardless of nationality. Online or in-person registration typically opens in January, with confirmation usually in April; after the window, District Education Offices handle late registrations and transfers.

Students who do not speak Greek may be placed on Ministry Greek-language courses and, where necessary, transition reception classes. Private primary schools are separately licensed; the Ministry currently lists 31 private primary schools in the Republic. English-medium primary options sit mainly in that private list.

  • Confirm your child’s age against the 2026-27 Ministry tables before 1 September.
  • Decide public Greek-medium versus private English-medium (or bilingual) early, especially before a primary start.
  • Diary January public registration if that is your path; keep identity, address proof and prior records ready.
  • Request fee schedules, deposits and hours from any private kindergarten or primary you shortlist.

Catchment, educational regions and where you live

Public places are organised by educational region. Living near a preferred public kindergarten or primary can matter for logistics, but it is not a Cyprus Gate placement promise. Private early-years and primary schools set their own admissions and may draw from a wider geography.

Use district guides as commute and lifestyle context while you verify enrolment rules: Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos and Larnaca. Limassol and Nicosia also tend to offer denser private English pathways later in schooling, which some families weigh even at nursery age.

Light property note for families with young children

With young children, daytime logistics often matter as much as school brand: nursery hours, grandparent or nanny support, park access, and a commute that still works when a toddler is tired. Treat those as filters inside a Needs and Status Analysis once an early-years pathway is realistic. Cyprus Gate stays on the property and relocation logistics; you instruct settings and licensed advisers directly on admissions.

Frequently asked questions

What age is pre-primary compulsory in Cyprus for 2026-27?

For 2026-27, compulsory pre-primary applies if a child is 4 years and 4 months before 1 September. Primary starts from age 6 before 1 September. Confirm the current Ministry age tables for the school year you will join.

Are public nurseries and kindergartens free?

Public schooling is free for pupils who live in Cyprus, including compulsory pre-primary under the published age rules. Younger children may gain a public place only if capacity remains after compulsory-age registrations, subject to published criteria. Private kindergartens charge fees and must be Ministry-approved.

How should we think about catchment and housing?

Public pre-primary places follow educational-region rules. Private early-years settings set their own admissions. Treat proximity as a lifestyle filter when shortlisting homes, then verify enrolment with the setting or District Education Office. Cyprus Gate does not allocate school places.
