Education in Cyprus for Relocating Families: Schools, Kindergartens and Universities

Last reviewed: 1 October 2026

Relocating families need a clear map of schooling in the Republic of Cyprus before they shortlist a district or a home. This briefing explains how state and private education work, compulsory ages for 2026-27, English-medium school examples by district from Ministry lists, university fee headlines for EU and non-EU students, and a practical checklist. Cyprus Gate advises on property and relocation logistics. We do not place children in schools or rank institutions.

Education for Relocating Families

How Cyprus Schooling Works (State vs Private)

Cyprus runs a dual system: free public schools taught mainly in Greek, and fee-paying private schools that may follow the public curriculum, a similar programme, or a different curriculum such as British or IB pathways. Private schools must be approved by the Ministry of Education. Relocating families usually compare language of instruction, fees and location before shortlisting.

Public schools are free for pupils who live in Cyprus. Private schools operate under the Private Schools Law of 2019 and cannot open without Ministerial approval on the advice of the Private Education Advisory Committee. The Ministry groups private schools as same type, similar type, or different type, depending on how closely they follow the public curriculum.

Compulsory Ages and Free Public Education

For 2026-27, compulsory pre-primary applies if a child is 4 years and 4 months before 1 September. Primary starts from age 6 before 1 September. Lower secondary (gymnasium) is compulsory to age 15 or completion of that cycle. Public schooling remains free through upper secondary to 18.

Sources: Ministry of Education pages on pre-primary registration ages and secondary general information. Prefer Ministry and statute wording over secondary summaries where ages diverge.

Languages of Instruction

Public schools teach mainly in Greek. English-medium instruction is concentrated in private schools of a different or similar type listed by the Ministry. Non-Greek speakers in the public system can access Ministry-organised Greek language support and, where needed, transition reception classes.

If you need an English-medium pathway, start from the Ministry private-school lists rather than marketing sites alone, then confirm language of instruction and curriculum type for the year you intend to enrol.

Early Years: Nurseries, Kindergarten and Preschool

Early years cover nurseries and kindergartens before and during compulsory pre-primary. Public pre-primary places follow educational-region rules. Private kindergartens must be Ministry-approved; the Ministry currently counts 173 private kindergartens in the Republic. Confirm ages, hours and fees directly with each setting.

Compulsory pre-primary for 2026-27 applies from 4 years and 4 months before 1 September. Younger children may gain a public place only if capacity remains after compulsory-age registrations, subject to published criteria. Private early-years settings vary widely in hours, language and fees.

Confirm current private kindergarten counts and approvals on the Ministry private education page (published figures at last review: 173 private kindergartens).

Primary and Secondary (Gymnasium / Lyceum)

Primary runs from age 6. Secondary splits into gymnasium (lower) then lyceum or technical routes (upper). Public places are free. Private primary and secondary schools are separately licensed; the Ministry currently lists 31 private primary and 39 private secondary schools in the Republic.

Gymnasium covers lower secondary. Lyceum and technical/vocational routes cover upper secondary after compulsory schooling ends. Families comparing public and private paths should check leaving qualifications (including Apolytirion where relevant) against the university destinations they have in mind.

Enrolment for Non-Greek Speakers and Immigrant Families

Children who live in Cyprus may enrol in public schools regardless of nationality. Online or in-person registration typically opens in January, with confirmation usually in April. After the window, District Education Offices handle late registrations and transfers. Bring identity, address proof and any prior school records.

Students who do not speak Greek may be placed on Ministry Greek-language courses and, where necessary, transition reception classes. Entry from overseas or from private schools of a similar or different type can involve placement tests. Confirm the current circular with the District Education Office for your area.

International and English-Medium Schools by District

English-medium options sit mainly in private schools approved by the Ministry of Education. Shortlist by district, language, curriculum and fees, then verify each school on the current Ministry lists. Cyprus Gate names examples from those lists; it does not rank schools or place children.

The Ministry currently reports 173 private kindergartens, 31 private primary schools and 39 private secondary schools in the Republic. Start with the private education overview and the private secondary general PDF (English). Names below are examples of English-instruction secondary schools drawn from that Ministry list. They are not recommendations or rankings.

Limassol

Limassol has the densest cluster of English-instruction private secondary schools on the Ministry list, including Foley’s School, The Grammar School (Limassol), The Island Private School of Limassol, Logos, The Heritage Private School and the American Academy Limassol pathway. Use the Limassol district guide when weighing commute and lifestyle.

Nicosia

Nicosia English-medium secondary examples on the Ministry list include The English School, American Academy Nicosia, The Grammar School (Nicosia), The GC School of Careers, Pascal Private Secondary School Lefkosia and the American International School in Cyprus. Paphos

Paphos English-medium secondary examples on the Ministry list include The International School of Paphos, Private British School Aspire, Private School Lumio and The Learning Centre Peyia. Relocators often weigh coastal lifestyle against fewer school choices than Limassol or Nicosia. See the Paphos district guide.

District context: Paphos property guide.

Fee example (not a market average): The International School of Paphos (ISOP) publishes 2026-27 Primary Years 3 and 4 tuition at €7,340 annually, and Secondary Years 12 and 13 at €9,515 annually, plus new-student assessment €115, admissions €260 and a €1,000 reservation deposit set off against tuition. Larnaca

Larnaca English-medium secondary examples on the Ministry list include the American Academy Larnaca, MED High and Pascal Private Secondary School Larnaka. The district is smaller than Limassol for private secondary choice, so verify capacity and entry tests early. See the Larnaca district guide for area context.

Famagusta / Paralimni Side (Republic of Cyprus Controlled Area Only)

On the Ministry private secondary list for the Ammochostos district, Xenion High School in Paralimni appears as an English-instruction school (with a related Greek-instruction listing at the same address). This note covers government-controlled areas of the Republic of Cyprus only. Do not treat Northern Cyprus institutions as part of the Republic school system.

Higher Education and Universities

Public university tuition for Cypriot and other EU undergraduates is commonly published at about €3,417 per year (paid by the Republic for eligible students). Non-EU students typically pay about €6,834. Since Brexit, UK nationals are generally treated as non-EU for these fees. Private universities offer many English-taught degrees at their own schedules.

Published University of Cyprus undergraduate headlines (confirm on the university tuition page before you rely on them): about €3,417 per academic year for Cypriot and other EU students (covered by the Republic for eligible students), and about €6,834 for non-European students. UK applicants after Brexit should plan on the non-EU category unless a specific published exception applies to their case.

Private universities in the Republic, including English-taught programmes at institutions such as the University of Nicosia and European University Cyprus, set their own tuition. Always read the current fee schedule for the programme and intake year. Separate self-financed English undergraduate programmes at public universities may carry different fees when launched; confirm at application time.

Practical Relocator Checklist

Treat schooling as a relocation workstream alongside housing, residency and budget. Confirm ages against the current school year, shortlist Ministry-approved schools, request fee schedules, plan January registration if using the public system, and keep documents ready. Cyprus Gate helps with property logistics, not school placement.

  • Confirm your child’s age against the 2026-27 (or later) Ministry age tables before 1 September.
  • Decide public Greek-medium versus private English-medium (or bilingual) pathways early.
  • Check the school appears on the current Ministry lists (overview, secondary PDF).
  • Request the latest fee schedule, deposit rules, entrance tests and document checklist from each shortlisted school.
  • For public enrolment, diary January registration and April confirmation; keep ARC or birth certificate and address bills ready.
  • Budget uniforms, books, transport, exams and trips separately from headline tuition.
  • Align housing shortlists with realistic school commute times once a pathway is realistic, not before.

Light Property Note: Catchment and Proximity

Proximity to a preferred school is a lifestyle filter when shortlisting homes, not a placement guarantee. Public educational regions and private school catchment habits differ. Use district guides to understand commute patterns, then verify enrolment rules with the school or District Education Office. Cyprus Gate does not allocate school places.

No. Cyprus Gate does not place children, rank schools, or give education or SEND advice. We help with property and relocation logistics so your housing plan fits a realistic schooling pathway you arrange directly with schools and the Ministry.

Decide secondary pathway before you lock a district or a home: free public Greek-medium gymnasium/lyceum versus Ministry-approved private English, British or IB routes. Continuity for IGCSE, A-Level or IB matters most mid-exam cycle. Limassol and Nicosia currently have denser English-instruction private secondary clusters on the Ministry list. Cyprus Gate does not place children or rank schools. Read Moving to Cyprus with a Teenager and the district notes in this briefing.
